How to choose the perfect music for your wedding

The dress is there, the church as well (already for a while), Villa Gervasio is booked, the guests are slowly answering … what is missing? The music! It will accompany you at every important moment of the ceremony, from the entrance to the church until the end of the festivities. On the other hand, a wedding is a big party, and what party would it be without the right music?

Each couple in love or future spouses has their own love song that recalls unforgettable moments. Music has great power, it seals an emotion in our mind and makes it indelible forever. That’s why it’s important to choose music for marriage according to criteria and according to the personal tastes of the couple, but not only. Ready to dance?

Music for the wedding: the ceremony

The first rule to choose music for marriage is to consider the context. For the ceremony you can choose between a guitar and vocal duo, an opera singer or a string trio. If you love American atmospheres, you might as well opt for the gospel choir.

If you get married in a church, the repertoire certainly gives space to classical music, as well as to acoustic versions of modern songs. At the beginning of the wedding event the first to arrive are your guests. To brighten up this moment, you can choose from wonderful classics such as Händel’s “Largo” or Haydn’s “Violin Concerto in A Major”. The moment that makes the beginning of the ceremony official is, of course, the entrance of the bride or groom.  Tradition is the main theme here: Mendelssohn’s “Marcia Nuziale”, Woflgang Amadeus Mozart with the “Marcia Nuziale” (from “Le Nozze di Figaro”), music by Georg Friedrich Händel or “Aria” (from “Water Music”) and Richard Wagner’s “Coro Nuziale” (from “Lohengrin”). The exchange of the rings is, instead, the most delicate and magical moment.  You have a wide choice of wonderful music such as “Ave Maria” by Schubert, “Panis Angelicus” by Franck, “Chiaro di Luna” by Debussy, “Sogno d’Amore” by Liszt.

If you marry in a civil ceremony, instead, you will have more freedom of choice. You can hire a band to make live music and also sing your favorite songs. The situation will be less “sacred” and formal, so you can also bet on blues or jazz pieces. If you want to dare and you love rock, choose a piece of this genre known to most! Your guests will appreciate it.

Wedding music: the reception

For the reception the speech changes. It is good to follow a musical climax, starting gently from the ceremony, warming up the atmosphere during the reception, to unleash with the final dances and celebrations. You could then choose a band or a dj, with whom to agree the playlist with the right advance, or think of alternating the two moments.

So, during the reception, the aperitif and dinner or lunch, the advice is to choose some background music. It should not have an exaggerated volume, it should not be intrusive and disturb, but only be a frame for moments of chat and food.

During the cutting of the cake, however, you can start to dare by raising the volume and involving all guests. You could focus on instrumental pieces only, especially during the banquet and choose songs sung, instead, between a course and the other.

Finally, the party, one of the funniest moments of the whole wedding. So, for the choice of music for the final party, give way to cheerful music to dance with family and friends until late at night!

Last two tips:

– For both the artists chosen for the rite and for the ceremony, it is important to identify the space in which to place the station for those who offer musical entertainment. If a DJ might need “only” a table on which to place the computer and its equipment, a band certainly needs a stage or a larger space. Consult with the location managers in time to manage the situation, as well as to understand how much electrical power can be needed;

– Don’t forget the SIAE! The Italian Society of Authors and Publishers, better known as SIAE, deals with the protection of copyright and requires the payment of a certain amount in the case of the reproduction of songs. Remember to deal with the artists you have hired and with the structure that hosts you so as not to risk fines.
